Captain Kresal turned his attention back to the mission. He scanned the rest of the chamber where the four furry creatures lurked, assessing the ground, the walls, the hanging moss, as carefully as he could, for tripwires or other traps. He didn’t like all that hanging moss, didn’t like the deep shadows far back in the three or four other tunnel mouths he could see from here. But in the end, it wouldn’t matter. He leaned back, addressing Talbot.

‘You check infrared?’

‘Yes sir. Four targets, weird damned things, definitely biologicals—’

‘Don’t waste time telling me what I already know, Sergeant,’ Kresal snapped, his voice never rising but his tone silencing his subordinate regardless. ‘You identify hardware? Explosive ordnance? Anything that gives you pause?’

Talbot shook his head. ‘Negative, sir. I don’t think there’s a weapon among them.’

Kresal glanced over his shoulder at the brigadier, crouched in the distance, unable to hear any of their conversation. ‘Animals,’ he snorted. ‘Fur-covered killer machines. Right. This is four morons in fur coats, maybe terrorists, maybe just home-grown wackos. Either way, we’re taking them.’ He smiled. ‘They don’t get to have all the fun out in Los Angeles, boys. Go weapons hot.’

The whole team moved at once, flipping the safeties off their MP5s and crouching, ready to spring into the roundhouse. They knew the plan. They would fan out by twos, each pair flanking one of the creatures in the tunnel, waiting just long enough for the captain to give the wackos fair warning. If the wackos showed the slightest sign of attacking, they’d drop all four of them.

‘Quicker than Cassius Clay laid out Sonny Liston down in Florida,’ the captain had told them earlier. ‘I lost a C-note on that fight. But I wouldn’t bet against us today.’ He was smiling.

No one was smiling now.

‘Go!’ Kresal hissed.
